Delhi’s first queer bazaar

Delhi has seen the Queer Pride Parade since 2008, but city folks can shop for wacky accessories like rainbow bracelets, bangles, masks and t-shirts with queer slogans at Delhi’s first Queer Bazaar today.

Organised by the Delhi Queer Pride Committee, the bazaar is open to people from all communities and will be a warm-up to the pride parade on November 25. “We are celebrating the Queer Pride month this November and the bazaar is like a curtain raiser for the same,” says Shalini Krishan, member of Delhi Queer Pride Committee.

The bazaar will give an opportunity for people from different communities like LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Queer, Intersex, Asexual) and their supporters to interact and give suggestions for the event at the end of the month.

Visitors can contribute by donating items like clothes, bedcovers, knick-knacks, toys, books stationery or even food that will be sold at the bazaar to collect funds for the parade. “One man’s trash is another person’s treasure. People can contribute products they don’t use often but are in good working condition for free at the bazaar,” says Rituparna Borah, a member of the committee for the last four years. There are mehendi and sketch artists and tarot card readers who have agreed to provide their services to the bazaar.

In an ode to the spirit of love, guests can also send an admiration message or an anonymous rose to their latest crush through the Queer Kamdev. “It is always difficult to express your love to someone for the first time. Queer Kamdev acts as a secret cupid that gives an opportunity to express your admiration for someone without offending them,” says Manak Matiyani, a 28-year-old who will be putting up a stall.
